Game Drives: What to Expect and How We Plan Them

The game drive is the core unit of almost every African safari — a few hours in an open vehicle with a trained guide, moving through a park or reserve in search of wildlife. Done well, it's unhurried and guide-led rather than a race between sightings; done poorly, it's a convoy following radio chatter to the same leopard as ten other vehicles. The difference comes down to which parks and camps you choose, and how much flexibility your itinerary allows.

Morning and Afternoon Drives

Most camps run two drives a day — out before sunrise, back for a midday break, then out again in the late afternoon through sunset. Early drives tend to produce the best predator activity, since big cats hunt overnight and are often still active or feeding at first light. Afternoon and evening drives shift the odds toward general game and, in parks that allow it, spotlighted night drives after dark.

Night Game Drives

A handful of private conservancies and reserves permit night driving, opening up an entirely different set of species — leopard, genet, civet, aardvark and other nocturnal wildlife rarely seen on a standard day drive. See our night game drives guide for where this is offered.

Vehicle Setup and Guide Quality

Open-sided 4x4 vehicles with raised seating give the clearest sightlines and photography angles, and a strong guide matters more than almost any other single factor in how a drive turns out — tracking skill, radio network and the judgement to hold back rather than crowd a sighting all shape the experience. We work only with camps and operators whose guiding standard we're confident in.

Private Conservancies vs National Parks

National parks are open to any licensed operator, which means more vehicles at popular sightings, especially in peak season. Private conservancies bordering parks like the Masai Mara cap vehicle numbers and permit off-road driving and night drives, at a higher nightly cost but a noticeably less crowded experience.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris

For a different perspective entirely, a sunrise hot air balloon flight over the Serengeti or Masai Mara adds an aerial view of the migration and landscape that no ground-based drive can match. See our hot air balloon safari guide.
