Kenya Coast Tours: Diani, Watamu, Malindi and Lamu
Kenya's Indian Ocean coast runs from the busy port city of Mombasa south to Diani and north to the quieter shores of Watamu, Malindi and Lamu — a stretch that offers a genuinely wide range of beach experiences within a single country, from lively resort strips to near-empty stretches of sand. Almost every visitor arrives as an extension after a Masai Mara safari, connected by a short domestic flight.
Diani Beach
Diani, south of Mombasa, is Kenya's best-known and most developed beach destination — a long stretch of powder-white sand protected by a barrier reef, with a well-established range of resorts, restaurants and water sports operators. It's the default choice for most first-time visitors combining a Masai Mara safari with beach time, and our 7-day Masai Mara and Diani Beach safari is built around exactly this pairing. See our complete Diani Beach guide for resorts, activities and how to get there.
Watamu and Malindi
Watamu, further north, centres on the Watamu Marine National Park — one of Kenya's best snorkelling and diving areas, with healthy coral gardens, resident sea turtles and seasonal whale shark encounters. Malindi, just north of Watamu, has a strong Italian expat influence and a more relaxed, less touristy feel than Diani, with good access to the same marine park. See our Watamu snorkelling guide for the full detail.
Lamu Island
Lamu, further north still, is Kenya's most distinctive coastal destination — a UNESCO World Heritage Swahili trading town where cars are essentially absent and donkeys remain the primary form of transport through narrow, centuries-old streets. It's the pick for travellers after culture and atmosphere over resort infrastructure, and rewards a slower pace than the busier southern beaches. See our Lamu Island guide.
Combining with a Safari
The Kenyan coast connects to Nairobi and the Masai Mara by short domestic flight, making a bush-to-beach itinerary genuinely simple to arrange. Most visitors spend four to five days on safari before flying to the coast for a week or more of beach time — see our 10-day Kenya safari and beach itinerary for a ready-made version of this trip.
Best Time to Visit
The Kenyan coast is warm year-round, with the driest, most reliable weather from December to March and July to October. April to June brings the long rains and is generally quieter and cheaper, though some beach activities can be disrupted by rough seas.
