Tanzania Tours: Serengeti Safaris and Zanzibar Beaches

Tanzania holds the largest concentration of protected wildlife land in Africa, anchored by the Serengeti's endless plains and the Ngorongoro Crater's extraordinary wildlife density, and pairs it with one of the Indian Ocean's most famous island escapes in Zanzibar. It's the classic bush-to-beach country — a proper migration safari followed by days on a genuinely beautiful, culturally rich island, connected by a short domestic flight.

The Serengeti

The Serengeti is Tanzania's flagship park and the heart of the Great Migration's year-round circuit — over two million wildebeest and zebra move in a continuous clockwise loop across its plains, with calving season in the southern Serengeti (January-March) and river crossings in the north (July-September) marking the two most dramatic phases. Even outside these peaks, the sheer scale and predator density of the Serengeti make it one of Africa's most consistently rewarding safari destinations. See our complete Serengeti guide and month-by-month migration guide for planning around a specific phase.

Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire

The Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed volcanic caldera holding one of the highest densities of wildlife anywhere on the continent within a single, self-contained bowl — including a genuine chance of seeing the endangered black rhino alongside lion, elephant and dense plains game. Tarangire National Park, less visited than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, is known for its ancient baobab trees and some of Tanzania's largest elephant herds, particularly during the dry season when animals concentrate along the Tarangire River. See our Ngorongoro Crater guide and Tarangire guide.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar combines UNESCO-listed Stone Town — a maze of narrow streets, carved doorways and centuries of Swahili, Arab and Indian trading history — with genuinely spectacular beaches at Nungwi, Kendwa and Paje, plus spice tours through the plantations that gave the island its historic name. It's Tanzania's natural post-safari stop: a 20-minute flight from Arusha or a slightly longer connection from the Serengeti's own airstrips. See our complete Zanzibar island guide and best beach resorts roundup.

Beyond the Northern Circuit

Lake Manyara National Park adds tree-climbing lions and flamingo-lined shores to a northern circuit itinerary with minimal extra driving. For travellers with more time, the Mahale Mountains on Lake Tanganyika's remote western shore offer chimpanzee trekking in a setting few visitors ever reach, and Kilimanjaro climbs pair naturally with a Zanzibar beach recovery afterward. See our Lake Manyara guide, Mahale Mountains guide and Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar combination guide.

Sample Itineraries

Our 10-day Serengeti and Zanzibar migration safari is the standard version of this trip — around a week across the northern circuit parks followed by three to four days on the beach. Travellers with more time often extend to our 14-day itinerary, which adds Tarangire and more beach time without feeling rushed between parks.
