Best Time to Go on Safari and Beach for First-Time Travellers
Timing a combined safari and beach trip means balancing two sets of seasonal factors — game viewing and migration timing on the safari side, and dry-season weather on the beach side. They don't always align perfectly, but most of our destinations have a clear best-value window. See our Africa safari seasons guide for the full picture.
Peak Season: July to October
This window covers the Mara River crossings in Kenya and Tanzania's dry season generally, delivering the best game viewing of the year — but also the highest prices and busiest camps. If migration season is the priority, this is worth booking well ahead for.
Shoulder Season: January to March
Excellent value with good weather across most of East Africa, plus calving season in the southern Serengeti and clear Kilimanjaro views from Amboseli. A strong choice for travellers prioritising value over the single most dramatic migration moment.
Gorilla Trekking: Year-Round
Uganda and Rwanda gorilla permits aren't seasonal, so timing for a gorilla-focused trip comes down to trail conditions and pricing rather than wildlife availability — see our Uganda best time to visit page for the detail.
When to Book
See our when to book your safari and beach holiday guide for how far ahead to plan depending on season and destination — peak-season camps and gorilla permits both sell out furthest in advance.
