Kenya Tours: Masai Mara Safaris and Indian Ocean Beaches

Kenya is where the modern safari was invented, and it remains the country most travellers picture when they imagine Africa — endless golden grassland, the wildebeest migration thundering across the Mara River, Maasai herders in red shuka cloth, and a coastline of white sand and turquoise water just a short flight from the game parks. It's also one of the most straightforward Africa destinations to combine into a single trip: a Masai Mara safari and a week on Diani Beach fit together naturally, with good roads and short internal flights linking the two halves of the country.

The Masai Mara

The Masai Mara is Kenya's flagship reserve and the stage for the Great Migration's most dramatic moment — the Mara River crossings, when over a million wildebeest and zebra funnel across crocodile-filled water in a chaotic, unforgettable spectacle, typically from July through October. Outside migration season the Mara still delivers some of Africa's best resident game viewing, with dense lion prides, healthy leopard and cheetah populations, and open plains that make for exceptional visibility. See our complete Masai Mara safari guide and migration timing guide for planning detail, and our luxury lodges roundup if a private conservancy stay is part of the plan.

Amboseli and Samburu

Beyond the Mara, Amboseli National Park delivers Kenya's most photographed backdrop — large elephant herds moving across open plains with Mount Kilimanjaro rising behind them across the Tanzanian border. Samburu National Reserve, in Kenya's drier north, holds a distinct suite of species found nowhere else in East Africa, including the Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe and Somali ostrich, and sees a fraction of the Mara's visitor numbers. Full detail is in our Amboseli guide and Samburu guide.

The Kenyan Coast

Diani Beach, south of Mombasa, is Kenya's best-known stretch of coast — powder-white sand, a barrier reef that keeps the water calm and clear, and a well-developed range of resorts from boutique beach lodges to full all-inclusive properties. Watamu Marine National Park, further north, is the pick for snorkelling and diving, with coral gardens, sea turtles and seasonal whale shark encounters. Lamu Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Swahili town with no cars and donkey-lined streets, is the choice for travellers after something quieter and more culturally immersive. See our Diani Beach guide, Watamu snorkelling guide and Lamu Island guide.

Combining Safari and Beach

Kenya's safari and beach regions are connected by a 45-60 minute domestic flight, which makes a bush-to-beach itinerary genuinely easy to arrange without long overland transfers eating into your holiday. Our 7-day Masai Mara and Diani Beach safari is the classic version of this combination — four days of game drives followed by three days of coastal relaxation — and our 10-day itinerary adds Amboseli or extra beach time for a fuller trip.

Best Time to Visit and What It Costs

July to October is peak season for the Mara River crossings and Kenya's dry season generally, meaning the best game viewing but also the highest prices and busiest camps. January to March offers excellent value with good weather and Amboseli's clearest Kilimanjaro views. See our Kenya safari costs guide for a full budget, mid-range and luxury price breakdown.
