Walking Safaris: Africa's Most Intimate Wildlife Experience

A walking safari trades the vehicle for your own feet and a trained, armed guide, moving slowly through the bush on tracks that a vehicle could never follow. It's a completely different register from a game drive — less about covering ground and ticking off species, more about reading the landscape itself: tracks, dung, alarm calls, and the small things a vehicle drives straight past.

What a Walk Actually Involves

Walks are typically two to four hours, at a slow, deliberate pace, in a small group led by a licensed walking guide and often a second armed escort. Big game is approached cautiously and from a safe distance, if approached at all — the point is rarely a close encounter with a dangerous animal, but the accumulated detail of tracks, birdlife, plants and smaller creatures that a vehicle-based drive misses entirely.

Where It's Offered

Not every park permits walking safaris, and where they're allowed, they're usually run from a small number of specialist camps rather than every property in the area. See our complete walking safari guide for which of our destinations offer this, and how to fit a walk into a broader safari itinerary.

Fitness and Safety

No special fitness is required beyond being able to walk at a slow pace for a few hours, though the experience is generally not offered to young children for safety reasons. Guides carry rifles as a last-resort precaution and are trained specifically in walking-safari safety protocol, which is distinct from the training required for vehicle-based guiding.

Combining a Walk with the Rest of Your Safari

Most travellers add one or two walks to an otherwise vehicle-based itinerary rather than building a whole trip around walking, since the pacing and focus are different enough that a mix of both usually gives the fullest picture of a destination.
