Uganda Best Time to Visit: A Month-by-Month Guide

Uganda's equatorial climate means it's a genuine year-round destination — gorilla trekking permits aren't seasonal, and the forest stays green whatever the month. That said, the two dry seasons offer firmer trails and easier road conditions, while the rains bring a quieter, greener experience at lower prices. See our best time to visit Uganda guide for the full month-by-month breakdown.

The Dry Seasons: June-August and December-February

These two windows offer the most reliable trekking conditions in Bwindi and the Rwenzori, firmer roads between parks, and the best game viewing in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls as animals concentrate near water sources. They're also Uganda's busiest and most expensive months, particularly for gorilla permits, which sell out furthest in advance for this period.

The Rainy Seasons: March-May and September-November

Rain in Uganda rarely means a washed-out day — typically a heavy afternoon shower rather than continuous rain — and the trade-off is a lusher forest, better birding, and noticeably fewer visitors on the trekking trails. Gorilla permits remain available with less advance booking required, and lodge rates often drop during these months.

Gorilla Trekking: Year-Round Regardless of Season

Because gorilla families are tracked daily and permits are simply capped rather than seasonal, trekking runs every month of the year. Season affects trail conditions and how physically demanding the walk in is, not whether trekking is possible at all.

When to Book

For the June-August or December-February windows, book gorilla permits three to six months ahead. Outside peak season, permits are usually available with a few weeks' notice, though we still recommend booking early for the specific sector and date you want.
